Rebecca Amis

        Rebecca Amis Lawson has been wholeheartedly involved in the dance world for most of her life. For the last 23 years she has been a full time teacher, performer and choreographer. At present she is director of and choreographer for the Whirlwind Dance Company. She has also performed with The New Performing Dance Company (7 years), Washington Square Repertory Co., NYC (3 years), and has been in both commercials and MTV Videos. She was on faculty of The American Dance Festival for the ‘91 and ‘92 seasons. She has taught Jazz dance at Meredith College and Duke University. In New York City, she taught at Broadway Dance Center and Morelli Ballet. Rebecca is currently a teacher of jazz dance technique at The Ballet School of Chapel Hill. In addition, Rebecca has her Master’s Degree in Dance/Movement Therapy from New York University. While in New York, she studied a variety of body therapies including body alignment, ideokinesiology, effort/shape analysis, and kinetic awareness. Rebecca has had extensive workshop training in Bioenergetics, Alexander Technique, Kinesiology for the Dancer, Yoga, Tai Chi, and Improvisational Movement. She is trained in Pilate’s technique and connective tissue massage. Currently, she is in private practice as a Dance/Movement Therapist using the body and movement to facilitate the therapy process. In this unique expressive therapy, Rebecca coalesces a psychological mindedness with a love of dance in the service of self-understanding and change.
