Julie Janus Walters

Julie Janus Walters is Assistant Professor of the Practice of Dance and Co-Director of the Duke Ballet Repertory Ensemble at Duke University. Ms. Janus Walters served as Assistant Director of the Carolina Ballet/UNC Wilmington Summer Intensive and Residency during the summers of 2007 and 2008. A former Principal Dancer with the Joffrey Ballet, she has taught for major professional companies and training organizations such as the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, Joffrey Ballet School, Princeton Ballet School, North Carolina Dance Theatre’s summer program, and Regional Dance America. Ms. Janus Walters has taught at UNC Chapel Hill for the previous 10 years and is a partner and teacher at the Ballet School of Chapel Hill. Ms. Janus Walters received her early training in Madison, Wisconsin. At 16, she received a scholarship to study at the Joffrey Ballet School where she was invited to join The Joffrey II Dancers. In 1982, Ms. Janus Walters was chosen by Robert Joffrey to join the Joffrey Ballet. As a leading dancer with the Joffrey for more than a decade, she was featured in performances around the world, and has appeared on national and international television, including two of the PBS Dance in America series. From 1993-1994 she was a Principal Dancer with the Atlanta Ballet and Guest Artist with the National Ballet of Iceland. She returned to the Joffrey in 1995 and was a Principal Guest Artist with the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago until 1998. Ms. Janus Walters has also been a Guest Artist with Carolina Ballet in Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, and Cinderella. All three productions have aired on UNC-TV. Most recently she performed in Robert Weiss’ new production of Sleeping Beauty.
